Andy’s

I thank Andy for sleeping on the futon. He mumbles. I think he said, “It wasn’t anything. No problem.” But he might have said, “I fucking hate people.”

Andy is sending out bad-mood signals. I try to cheer him up by giving a detailed account of how the Canadian chain of Tim Horton’s is trying to conquer the American donut market. It is the only thing I have learned in the fog of the last four days.

I explain that I want to use Timbits in the illo somehow. Timbits are Tim Horton’s version of “Munchkins,” i.e., donut holes. Andy knows Tim Horton’s well; his mood lifts as he suggests to me that chocolate Timbits look like cat shit.

Minda goes to the kitchen and brings me a ginger ale with a bendy straw and another bowl of tiny pasta.

My sister offers to drive me home. I thank her but assure her I can take a taxi. She hugs me and tells me she loves me. She does not want me to leave. I feel very lucky and I am tempted to stay. This is because I know as soon as I leave, Minda and Andy will make fun of me for traveling to India.

I call Minda from the lobby as promised. Upstairs, I change the sheets and pillowcases. I set up at my desk and try to come up with an idea for the job. The idea happens. I will need Jason to finish it.

I do illos in different styles, depending on the idea. Often my idea is best as a drawing, but sometimes the idea needs to be built and photographed. I e-mail Una to apologize for the long pause and tell her an idea is on the way.

I hear the door unlock. It’s Jason. I run at him like a puppy.
